Dental care at Ames

At Ames, we know how important a smile is to your over all look. Whether you are simply looking to make a few dental adjustments or a total dental overhaul, we have a number of procedures to help you achieve that smile you so much deserve

Crowns

Crowns, which are also sometimes called caps, are carefully fitted sleeves that sit over an existing tooth in order to protect it from further damage or to improve your smile. Often applied as part of a root canal treatment, they can also hold together teeth that are cracked and support bridges. Not only this, they can also be used to cover and improve the look of teeth that have become discolored.

Why a crown may be needed

  • There is no longer enough healthy tissue left to effectively hold a filling
  • To protect a damaged or weak tooth
  • To aesthetically improve the appearance of a misshaped or discolored tooth
  • As a final stage in a root canal treatment

What's involved?

Preparation time will depend on the condition of the tooth and how many teeth are being treated. To begin with, your dentist will take a mould of your teeth pre-treatment and discuss what type of look and shade of white you would like to have. Once this has been done, your tooth will then carefully be reshaped to ensure that it is able to fully support the crown. A final mould will be taken of your tooth post treatment too. Finally, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown (based on the first mould of your teeth) in order to protect your tooth until the cap is prepared and put into place. Treatment is usually over 2 visits. At Ames we have crowns made from the following materials;

Zirconium
Porcelain

How long will a crown last?

Depending greatly on your habits, lifestyle and oral care routine, a crown can last anywhere between 5 – 15 years or even more. Teeth grinding or clenching can put pressure on a crown leading to it either fracture or break. You should discuss this with your dentist or consultant so that a solution can be found.

How should I look after my crown?

You should treat your crown as you do with any other tooth. Although it is not susceptible to decay itself, the tooth that it protects is.

YOU SHOULD TREAT YOUR CROWN AS YOU DO ANY OTHER TOOTH. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO DECAY ITSELF, THE TOOTH THAT IT PROTECTS IS. TO AVOID DECAY OR GUM DISEASE, YOU SHOULD FOLLOW A HEALTHY ORAL HYGEINE ROUTINE, INCLUDING:

Flossing carefully between your teeth (floss though the tooth as opposed to up the tooth)
Brushing the tooth with a soft tooth brush

Dental implants

Unlike other tooth replacement procedures, implants actually help promote healthy bone growth as they are osteoconducive. Generally, it is a small surgical procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic, in which a titanium screw will be fitted into your jaw. Dental implants are usually used where patients have more than one missing tooth and using a bridge is no longer possible.

THE PROCEDURE

The implants themselves are small titanium screws. Once the dentist has prepared a place for them to fit, they will then be implanted into your jaw. This will act as a stable support for replacement teeth that could be in the form of a crown, bridge or secured denture. Not only do they look highly natural when restoration is complete, but they also provide the patient with a high degree of functionality. In cases where the patient only require one or two implants the procedure can usually be completed within a week. However, patients requiring more extensive implant work, may be asked to return after a period of 3 months. In both cases, temporary dentures or crowns will be provided until the work is complete.

Veneers

Porcelain Veeneers are ceramic shells that are bonded to the front surface of your existing teeth. They are commonly used to disguise crooked or chipped teeth, discoloration and other underlying cosmetic issues and help give you a better smile.

The procedure

Of all the procedures that we offer at Ames, venners are among the least painful. Generally it will take 2 visits to complete the procedure. In the first visit, your dentist will help you choose both the look and shade of the venner to be created. Your dentist will then remove a slither of enamel from the tooth that is to be treated. An impression of your teeth will then be taken by your dentist and this will form the template from which your veneer will be created. Sometimes a temporary veneer may be used to help protect the tooth from any damage. In the second visit, your veneer will be securely fixed using a very strong adhesive and once it is in place it will be given a final polish so that it fits in more naturally with surrounding teeth. If looked after well your veneer should last up to 20 years.
